El día 23 de diciembre de 2020 se ha publicado en el BOE la nueva Directiva de la Unión europea relativa a la calidad de las aguas de consumo humano.
La Directiva persigue el mismo objetivo y además busca mejorar el acceso a dichas aguas para todos en la Unión. Por tal motivo, se establecen los requisitos mínimos que deben cumplir las aguas de consumo humano o aguas potables. Los estados deberán velar por que no contengan elementos que puedan suponer un peligro potencial para la salud humana. Algunos de estos son:
- Microorganismos
- Parásitos
- Sustancias
- Etc.
Esta Directiva no regula las aguas minerales naturales y las aguas que tengan la consideración de medicamento, pues esos tipos de agua ya están regulados por otras Directivas. Ahora bien, las aguas de manantial deben ajustarse a lo dispuesto en la presente Directiva y, por lo que respecta a los requisitos microbiológicos.
Revisión de la OMS
En 2017, la OMS realizó una revisión de la lista de parámetros y valores paramétricos en vigor en la CE para determinar si es necesario adaptarla a los avances técnicos y científicos. De la revisión se extrae que deben controlarse los patógenos intestinales y las bacterias del género Legionella y añadirse seis parámetros químicos o grupos de parámetros.
Compuestos emergentes
Los compuestos emergentes son un aspecto nuevo que se regula en la Directiva. Estos compuestos tienen propiedades de alteración endocrina, los productos farmacéuticos y los microplásticos. Para lo cual debe introducirse en la Directiva un mecanismo de lista de observación. Este mecanismo va a permitir responder a las crecientes preocupaciones sociales de manera dinámica y flexible. También va a permitir realizar un seguimiento de los nuevos conocimientos sobre la relevancia para la salud humana de esos compuestos emergentes, así como de los nuevos conocimientos sobre los planteamientos y las metodologías de seguimiento más adecuados.
